Carbon Footprint: Measure, Plan and Reduce yours

Many people, multinational companies, big cities, and nations have started measuring their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, so as to enable them make positive changes from the complex the global results of our lifestyle around the world.

The impact of human activity on the environment has increased alarmingly and is a call for concern. The carbon footprint measures the amount of Green House Gas (GHG) we individually produce by burning of fossil fuels daily through domestic energy consumption, heating, for electricity, transportation etc. It also measures the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use - the more we buy the more emissions will be caused on our behalf.

The Carbon footprint explains personal behavior on global warming. CO2 emissions are the main cause of global warming which results to the rise in temperatures, melting of glaciers and polar ice, increase in sea levels, floods and tornadoes. Recent investigations have shown that inconceivable catastrophic changes in the environment will take place as soon as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere reaches the level of about 450 ppm. Today's concentration is already at 380 ppm and it rises on average 2 - 3 ppm (parts per million) each year, so that the critical value will be reached in approximately 25 to 30 years from now.

Our footprint is reflected in the daily choices we make and determines our contribution to the amount of damage done to the immediate surroundings, and to the planet as a whole. Environmental Scientists believe that man-made gases are causing severe global warming effects which are having alarming results on the environment and drastic climatic variations we face around the world today. These effects desperately need to be reduced to bring stability to our atmosphere and to the planet. We need to implement CO2 reduction by taking significant actions to reduce our carbon-footprint where possible.
