The Online Discussion Platform is the first step in a series of initiatives led by UNITAR to empower women in diplomacy through capacity building.

The winners of the Equatorian Prize 2012 sharing their experiences in Rio +20

In August 2011, UNDP Equator Initiative announced the call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2012, which recognized 25 outstanding local initiatives that are working to advance sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. The 25 recipients of the Equator Prize 2012 each received $5,000 (USD), with 10 selected for special recognition and a total of $20,000 (USD). Representatives of winning communities participated in the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which was held in Brazil in June 2012.

In India, where the main event is being held, 100,000 people, representing different rural communities, especially tribal, landless and small farmers, will walk in formation together 350 kilometers from Gwalior (near the Taj Mahal) to New Delhi. The people will raise the issue about land being a key asset in development and poverty reduction, and that high levels of landlessness and deprivation need to be reduced for achieving positive national and global development. The movement is also being held for claiming the land rights of indigenous people.

Final Declaration of the People Summit at Rio +20

The social and popular movements, trade unions, people, civil society organizations and environmental organizations from around the world were present at the People's Summit at Rio+20 for Social and Environmental Justice, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at 15-22 June 2012. The Summit denounced the true structural causes of the global crisis that are "the patriarchal, racist and homophobic capitalist system" and that the solution are to be found in people, their history, their customs, knowledge, practices and systems of production.

RIO DE JANEIRO (JUNE 18): Only two days before the official opening of
the United Nations 20th Anniversary Conference of the 1992 "Earth
Summit", representatives from the Women's Major Group delivered an
impassioned rejection of nuclear power and a call for safe energy
development in response to a half-day conversation between energy
experts and civil society sponsored by the Brazilian government and
entitled the "Rio+20 Development Dialogue on Energy" that they
believed was bluntly promoting nuclear energy.
