From the UNDPI/NGO section: On June 18 2009, representatives from UNEP (Division of Technology, Industry and Economics), NASA, environmental NGOs and the Coca-Cola Company gathered to discuss the current state and the future of the ozone layer, and its relation to climate change.
It highlights the success of the Montreal Protocol which since 1990s has controlled the use of CFCs known to deplete the ozone layer significantly. However, the replacement gases, also human made HFCs and HCFCs, have considerable global warming potential (GWP), and therefore research needs to be continued to find and develop more climate-friendly solutions.
The summary consists of each speaker's separate statements followed by a prepared Q&A session with the chair and an unprepared Q&A with the audience.
